University of Okalahoma Campus Visit October 2011

OU! Go Sooners! Sooner Boomer! The campus is awash of Red and White, at least half of the students walk across campus wearing something advertising the school.  The football team, baseball team and softball teams are practicing and so is the band.   OU banners fly from the lampposts.  The University of Oklahoma is alive with student life, school spirit and activity. Today I visited campus for the first time, spent time in the admissions office and was led on a campus tour.

Almost 80% of the 18,800 undergrads hail from Oklahoma or Texas but a California student could still feel very much at home in the sunshine on campus.  On a fall day, the temperature is 90 degrees and the sun is shining, although the feel on campus is very fall like.  Students are gearing up to run for their tailgate spots, which they do 24 hours before game time.

The most popular majors on campus are Meteorology, Musical Theater, Engineering, Business, Nursing and Education.  The non-resident cost of attendance is $28,400, making it comparable to a UC education.  The average class size is 31 and only 4% of classes have over 100 students.

There are multiple opportunities for merit scholarships for students with a 3.5 GPA and an ACT score of 28 or SAT of 1250.  Admission is guaranteed for students with a 3.5 (unweighted) GPA OR an ACT of 26 OR an SAT of 1170.

Housing is guaranteed for freshmen and freshmen are required to live on campus.  Most sophomores either live in Greek housing or on campus apartments.  There are many other housing options off campus including apartments and houses.

Directly across the street from campus is “Campus Corner” a shopping and eating district frequented by the students.  On game days the streets are filled with fans that are not inside the stadium.

For a student looking for a medium sized college with strong spirit, student activities, and a variety of majors I recommend OU.
